Prozac dosage

Prozac (Generic name: fluoxetine hydrochloride) is available in the following dosage forms: capsule, delayed release.

In the case of Major Depressive Disorders: In Adult patients Prozac dosage can range from 20 mg to a maximum of 80 mg per day. The initial Prozac dosage is 20 mg per day taken in the morning. A dose increase can be considered after several weeks of not achieving the best results. Doses above 20 mg/day may be administered either in the morning or as per the BID schedule (i.e., morning and noon), however should not exceed a maximum dose of 80 mg/day.

Children and adolescents can initiate Prozac treatment with an initial Prozac dosage ranging from 10 to 20 mg per day and then proceed to a Prozac dosage of 20 mg per day after one week of being given a Prozac dosage of 10 mg per day. Lower weight children have higher plasma levels; hence, the initial Prozac dosage for this group may be 10 mg per day.  If; after several weeks there is no sufficient clinical improvement then the dosage can be increased to 20 mg per day. Cases of acute major depressive order may take longer to heal.

Next in line is the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

The initial Prozac dosage can be 20 mg per day, taken in the morning. If in case after several weeks of treatment, no sufficient clinical improvement is observed then a dose increase is recommended. In such a case full therapeutic effect may be delayed for no longer than 5 weeks of treatment and in rare cases even longer.

Prozac dosage above 20 mg per day can be taken, once in the morning every day, or as per the BID schedule, which can be morning and noon. A dose range of 20 to 60 mg/day is recommended although a maximum level of 80 mg per day has been well received with good results.  Care should be taken to ensure that the maximum Prozac dosage should not exceed 80 mg/day.

Pediatric Population, which includes children and adolescents, the initial Prozac dosage, can be in the range of 10 mg per day to 60 mg per day (dosage recommended following controlled clinical trial)
